After day one of the Trainers Challenge one-hour session, each trainer ended their session at different stages. The Trainers Challenge has three professional horse trainers and pairs them with an unbroke colt. The trainers then have four one-hour sessions over the course of the three days to work with their horse and get them ready for the Trainers Challenge on Sunday afternoon. This year Evan Bonner, Ed Dabney, and TJ Clibborn are the trainers participating in the challenge.Evan Bonner selected Douglas as his horse for the challenge and immediately began working to get a halter on him. Bonner spent day one working movements with Douglas getting him to move back and forward comfortably. By the end of the first-hour session Bonner had a saddle on and was beginning to get his partner comfortable with the saddle. The next pair matched up was Ed Dabney and Pennie this duo spent their first hour together getting comfortable in the pen together. Pennie was not so inclined to be haltered by Dabney but by the end of Day one he had the halter on. The final trainer and horse partnership was TJ Clibborn and Stormy, this pair had to work through some personality clashes during their session. Clibborn chose to set up different obstacles in the round pen for his first session with Stormy. This duo had to work through a few biting issues and pawing with Stormy but by the end of the session he was getting comfortable with Clibborn. With 10 minutes left in their hour session, Clibborn had saddled Stormy and called it a day. Ending their first session on a high note with a positive reinforcement.
The Trainers Challenge continues throughout the weekend with three more one-hour sessions for each horse and rider partnerships.
